INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANTS

Thank you for your interest in applying for the Mobile Maritime Leadership Scholarship (MMLS). This application package will provide instructions for applying for the scholarship, information on eligibility criteria, and other important information relating to the award of the scholarship. An application form is included at the end of this package.

The MMLS fund was established in 2009 to recognize and promote leadership in the maritime industry, specifically in the Port of Mobile, Alabama. The scholarship program is intended to provide financial assistance to students who have demonstrated high levels of academic performance and leadership and who intend to further their education in the maritime field. The scholarship is made possible through the generous donations of the Propeller Club of Mobile, Alabama, the Seamen’s Foundation of Mobile, and a local anonymous maritime industry business owner.

The MMLS is awarded annually and may be offered to one or more recipients. The total amount awarded will be decided on an annual basis, by the Scholarship Committee, based on available funds. The total scholarship award can be given to one recipient, or dividend amongst multiple recipients at the Committee’s discretion.

Section 1 – Eligibility Criteria

Henceforth, the above mentioned institutions will be referenced as a “Qualifying Educational Institution”. Scholarship winners are not eligible to receive the MMLS in subsequent years. Scholarship applicants, if not selected to win the scholarship, are encouraged to reapply in subsequent years.

Section 3 – Amount of Scholarship

As mentioned in the “Instructions to Applicants”; the scholarship amount for the Academic Year will be decided on an annual basis, by the Scholarship Committee, based on available funds. Section 4 – Payment of the Scholarship(s) and Use of Scholarship Funds

The Scholarship Committee will pay the recipient(s) the scholarship amount within six months following announcement of the scholarship award winner(s). Scholarship recipient(s) must request payment via email or letter to the Scholarship Committee, and provide the Committee evidence of enrollment in the Qualifying Educational Institution to be eligible for payment. Failure to apply for the payment, or request extension of the payment period, within six months of the announcement of the award, will result in loss of the scholarship.

The scholarship funds may be used to cover the cost of the tuition, school fees, books, and room and board of the scholarship recipient while he or she is enrolled at the qualifying educational institution.

Neither the Propeller Club of Mobile, the Seamen’s Foundation of Mobile, or other donors accept any responsibility for the conduct, personal affairs, debts, or obligations of a scholarship recipient(s), and they shall not be liable therefor, in any manner.

Section 5 – Selection of Qualifying Educational Institution
